A renowned pioneer in the hair restoration field, Dr. Martin Unger is the originator of the acclaimed "PATE scalp procedure," an innovative hair restoration method. He has also developed other ground-breaking hair transplant techniques and procedures that are widely used by doctors around the world.
Dr. Unger has had a particular interest in Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) for several decades and worked with LLLT treatment for wound (skin) and bone healing even as a surgical resident. He is now considered to be a prime authority in this field, and recently gave a presentation on the use of Low Level Laser Therapy for hair restoration at both the ninth annual meeting of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and the eighteenth annual meeting of The Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.
Dr. Unger is a Founding Member, Diplomate (certified specialist), and Examiner for the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. He is an Inspector/Assessor for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, the medical licensing body for the Province of Ontario, and a teaching faculty member of the University of Toronto. He is also Chief of Plastic Surgery at One Medical Place Hospital in Toronto, Canada.
Dr. Unger has served as a medical consultant for both Health Canada, the Federal department responsible for helping Canadians maintain and improve their health, and the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a federal agency charged with protecting the public health by assuring the safety and efficacy of drugs, medical devices and other healthcare products. He has been a clinical investigator for Astra Pharma, one of Canada's largest research-oriented pharmaceutical companies, and has also worked as a consultant for cosmetic companies Revlon and Faberge.
Dr. Unger is the only Canadian to sit on the Board of Trustees of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) and to serve as guest editor for the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery. He has served as an examiner for the ABCS for over a decade, and was elected as the first President of The American Society of Hair Restoration Surgery by his peers. He is an editorial advisor to several cosmetic surgery journals, has contributed chapters to numerous medical books, and has presented papers on his work at medical meetings throughout the world.
Dr. Unger has been interviewed and quoted on many international news shows, his radio appearances include CFRB;s "Doctor on Call", CHFI's "Newsmakers" and Q107's "The Barometer Show." He has appeared on television shows broadcast around the globe, including "Canada A.M." the CBC's "The National - The Journal" and "Prime Time News", and The Vatican Network's "Dr. Piero Schiavazzi Show."
